Summary
The rocky shores of the north-east Atlantic have been long studied. Our focus is from Gibraltar to Norway plus the Azores and Iceland. Phylogeographic processes shape biogeographic patterns of biodiversity. Long-term and broadscale studies have shown the responses of biota to past climate fluctuations and more recent anthropogenic climate change. Inter- and intra-specific species interactions along sharp local environmental gradients shape distributions and community structure and hence ecosystem functioning. Shifts in domination by fucoids in shelter to barnacles/mussels in exposure are mediated by grazing by patellid limpets. Further south fucoids become increasingly rare, with species disappearing or restricted to estuarine refuges, caused by greater desiccation and grazing pressure. Mesoscale processes influence bottom-up nutrient forcing and larval supply, hence affecting species abundance and distribution, and can be proximate factors setting range edges (e.g., the English Channel, the Iberian Peninsula). Impacts of invasive non-native species are reviewed. Knowledge gaps such as the work on rockpools and host–parasite dynamics are also outlined.
Business Associations and Economic Development: Why Some Associations Contribute More Than Others

Most current theoretical treatments view business associations as rent-seeking, special interest groups. Yet, empirical research in a wide range of developing countries reveals a broad range of functions and activities undertaken by business associations, many of which promote efficiency. These positive functions address crucial development issues (emphasized in the New Institutional Economics) such as strengthening property rights, facilitating vertical and horizontal coordination, reducing information costs, and upgrading worker training. The associations that engage in these developmental activities tend to be well organized and staffed. This institutional strength depends in turn on high member density, valuable selective benefits (often delegated by governments), and effective internal mediation of member interests. In addition external factors, especially competitive markets and government pressure, encourage associations to use their institutional strength for productive ends.

Economists have identified the existence of a middle-income (MI) trap but have yet to analyze the politics of this trap. The authors argue that countries in the MI trap face two major institutional and political challenges. First, the policies necessary to upgrade productivity—as in human capital and innovation—require enormous investment in institutional capacity. Second, these institutional challenges come at a time when political capacity for building these institutions is weak, due primarily to the fragmentation of potential support coalitions. Politics are stalled in particular by fractured social groups, especially business and labor, and more generally by inequality. These conditions result in large measure from previous trajectories of growth. The empirical analysis concentrates on nine of the larger MI countries.

Using USDA's Agricultural Resource Management Survey data, factors leading to the adoption of technology, management practices, and production systems by U.S. beef cow-calf producers are analyzed. Binary logit regression models are used to determine impacts of vertical integration; region of the U.S.; farm size, diversification, and tenure; and demographics on adoption decisions. Significant differences were found in adoption rates by region of the U.S., degree of vertical integration, and size of operation, suggesting the presence of economies of size and vertical economies of scope. Results also indicate high degrees of complementarity among technologies, management practices, and production systems.

Pasteurella multocida has been recognized as a contributor to debilitating and fatal porcine pneumonia for at least 120 years and there continues to be sustained, unabated high prevalence of the organism in cases submitted for diagnostic work up. Understanding of its role in disease has been limited, in part because of difficulty in reproducing the disease experimentally with capsular type A strains of P. multocida, the predominant type associated with porcine pneumonia. This limitation has stymied the development of improved methods for disease control. In this review, the reports of efforts to reproduce the disease are compared. Reports have indicated induction of pneumonia in combined infections with agents such as hog cholera virus, pseudorabies virus and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. Pneumonia has been induced with intratracheal or endobronchial inoculation of anesthetized swine using capsular type A strains. Substantial recent progress in understanding the putative virulence attributes and molecular genetics of P. multocida will likely lead to better understanding of the host–parasite and parasite–parasite interactions in porcine pneumonia associated with this organism. In particular, it seems important to consider the role of biofilm formation in the pathogenesis of this disease. Ultimately, this understanding should provide a foundation for better methods for induction of the experimental disease, development of improved diagnostics, development of better therapeutic/prophylactic pharmaceutical approaches and development of immunoprophylactic products.

Neurotrophins are a family of proteins with pleiotropic effects mediated by two distinct receptor types, namely the Trk family, and the common neurotrophin receptor p75NTR. Binding of four mammalian neurotrophins, nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), and neurotrophin-4/5 (NT-4/5), to p75NTR is studied by molecular modeling based on X-ray structures of the neurotrophins and the extracellular domain of p55TNFR, a homologue of p75NTR. The model of neurotrophin/receptor interactions suggests that the receptor binding domains of neurotrophins (loops I and IV) are geometrically and electrostatically complementary to a putative binding site of p75NTR, formed by the second and part of the third cysteine-rich domains. Geometric match of neurotrophin/receptor binding domains in the complexes, as characterized by shape complementarity statistic Sc, is comparable to known protein/protein complexes. All charged residues within the loops I and IV of the neurotrophins, previously determined as being critical for p75NTR binding, directly participate in receptor binding in the framework of the model. Principal residues of the binding site of p75NTR include Asp47, Lys56, Asp75, Asp76, Asp88, and Glu89. The additional involvement of Arg80 and Glu53 is specific for NGF and BDNF, respectively, and Glu73 participates in binding with NT-3 and NT-4/5. Neurotrophins are likely to induce similar, but not identical, conformational changes within the p75NTR binding site.

Sol-gel glass microcomposite processing of polybenzobisthiazole (PBZT) films increased the compressive strength of PBZT/PEEK film laminates by more than four times. The presence of glass within microfibrillar regions of PBZT/sol-gel glass microcomposite films inhibited microbuckling during compression and greatly increased resistance to compressive failure.
Studies of PBZT/sol-gel glass microcomposite film morphology conducted at UMass by E.L. Thomas and at Penn State by C. Pantano indicated sol-gel glass precursor solutions had condensed within PBZT to produce a fine-scale (100 to 300Å) granular structure, homogeneously distributed throughout PBZT lamellae of microfibrils.
In a parallel effort, we have successfully extended sol-gel microcomposite processing technology for the improvement of compressive strength in ordered polymer fibers. Details concerning our results will be discussed.

Sol-gel glass processing of poly (benzobisthiazole) (PBZT) films increased the compressive strength of PBZT/PEEK film laminates by more than four times, with the potential for further improvement indicated. This was accomplished by infiltrating sol-gel glass precursor reagents into microfibrillar regions of PBZT film, forming PBZT/sol--gel glass microcomposites that combined the high compressive strength of glass with the exceptional strength and toughness of PBZT ordered polymer. The presence of glass within PBZl/sol-gel microcomposite films inhibited the buckling of microfibrils during film compression, greatly increasing the resistance of the films to compressive failure. The use of sol-gel glass compositions that fuse at temperatures within thermal stability limits of PBZT (600 C) should further improve PBZI film compressive strength.
Preliminary experiments involving sol-gel processing of PBZT fibers did not show improvements in fiber compressive strength. Microscopic analysis of treated fibers indicated that fiber abrasion and kinking had occurred during batch processing steps.
The results of our continuing efforts to achieve 100 Ksi compressive strength in PBZT films and fibers will be discussed.
